What is Hanna Somatics Education (HSE)?

Hanna Somatics is a system for re-educating the body and brain through direct, first-person experience.

The term "Somatics" originates from the Greek word "soma," meaning "body," and refers to bodily sensations experienced and controlled from within.

This approach, pioneered by the late neuromuscular expert Thomas Hanna, PhD, focuses on retraining muscle function by cultivating conscious awareness and control over bodily movements.

By retraining the nervous system, we can relieve our own pain, improve posture and prevent recurring injuries through Somatic movement education. HSE relies on intentional movements called pandiculations, which reset muscles to their natural length under the control of the brain and nerve receptors.

Sensory Motor Amnesia

HSE is a highly effective method of pain relief and sensory motor training that targets the condition of sensory motor amnesia (SMA). SMA is the condition of chronically-tight muscles that have learned to stay contracted due to repeated and reflexive response to stress such as accidents, injuries, surgeries, repetitive tasks, one-sided sports, and ongoing emotional stress.

Cultivate Curiosity & Kindness to what you find

You will probably find blind spots in your body map of awareness. Due to stress and the reflexes that are triggered in every mammal, parts of you may have sensory motor amnesia, areas that need to be visited again and again until the awareness is restored and the muscles and tissues are in your voluntary control. Be kind to what you find, life is stressful, and beating yourself up mentally will not release those tight muscles. Being super kind to yourself and prioritising your own healing will make a huge difference.

Quiet place to practice

You don't need lots of space to practice, but peace and quiet are very helpful, especially in the beginning of your journey. Try to find somewhere you won't be disturbed. Ensure there are no drafts in the room and make sure you are warm. Your body temperature will drop during parts of the class. It's very important that you stay focused on the somatic movements and what you can sense going on inside of your soma (your body).

Inner Space Norwich where I share classes and workshops is a perfect location, being an ex recording studio it offers peace and quiet in the heart of Norwich

Slowing down during a practice
Moving almost in slow motion at times,
this allows you to sense and register what's going on inside of you. "We aim to cultivate a moment-to-moment awareness of the present sensations within your soma (body) From this place great change can happen.
